Monday Magic Presents Romance Author Darcy Flynn

Callie: Today I’m excited to welcome Darcy Flynn to our Monday Magic blog. She’ll tell us about her romance novel, Keeper of My Heart.  Don’t you just lover her cover?  Since I’m a bit ga-ga over lighthouses, you can imagine how much I love her cover.  But first let’s hear a little bit about her.

Darcy: First I want to thank you for having me today!

My name is Darcy Flynn and I live with my husband and son on a horse farm in Franklin, Tennessee. It’s about twenty miles south of Nashville. I raise beautiful rare breed chickens and enjoy their fresh eggs every day. I also love to stargaze, and the night skies in the country provide the perfect venue.

I enjoy all types of romances, but the sweet ones hold a special place in my heart. They’re my first love. I particularly like the ones where they start out hating each other. Sparing with their verbal foils until the ‘melt in your arms bliss‘ kiss.

Callie:  I’m amazed at how many romance authors live in rural/country settings. Your home sounds amazing. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Darcy: Occasionally, my ideas come from a simple action or a comment from people around me. Or, stem from something that I love, like lighthouses.  But most of the time they come from listening to music. When I listen to smooth jazz, a pop song or symphonic music, pictures start forming in my head, then a scene, and from there a story begins to form.

Callie: It sounds like an amazing process.   What does your family think of your writing?

Darcy: Both my husband and son are proud of my accomplishment and have supported and encouraged me throughout the process. They’ve been great!

Callie: Family support makes all the difference.  Can you tell us what you’re working on now?

Darcy: I’m working on a story about a young woman who is struggling to keep her Bed and Breakfast afloat in the face of fierce competition from her neighbor who is the owner of a successful hunting lodge and the son of the man she believes responsible for her father’s demise. It takes place in west Texas and it’s my first cowboy romance. I’m having so much fun writing it!

Callie: Sounds like a great story.  I can’t wait to read it.  How do you deal with writer’s block?

Darcy: When I get stuck, I take a walk on my farm and listen to music that depicts the scene or the mood I’m looking for. As I mentioned earlier scenes form in my head-my own private music videos. Usually, this breaks the block and I can get back to work. I’ve also been known to call my critique partners and brainstorm solutions with them.

Callie:  Ah, critique partners. Where would we be without them?  What was your reaction when you got the first “call”

Darcy: I was absolutely thrilled! My husband and I had just flown in from London, where we live part of the year. While standing in the aisle after we landed, I checked my e-mail and had a message that Soul Mate Publishing loved my story and wanted to publish it!

Callie:  What a great way to find out!  Did you let out a ‘whoop’ on the plane?  I want to thank Darcy for being here with us and sharing her life and book with us.

Great interview, Darcy. Loved hearing about your farm, your joy of music, and how you write sweet romances. Beautiful cover too! :)

  3. Darcy – I loved hearing about how music helps you form pictures, scenes and stories. I like to use music to evoke emotions, but so far it hasn’t inspired pictures or scenes. Your cowboy romance sounds fun. Best of luck with Keeper of the Heart.

      Thanks Ally,
Yes, music has always inspired pictures and scenes in my head. When I was growing up, I used to act them out. I thought surely, I’d become an actress! I guess writing a novel could be considered a second cousin! lol
      Thanks for stopping by today!

    • Callie says:

Yes, that was the last thing I thought I’d see in my e-mail. But, it certainly perked me up after that long flight from London! It was a sweet “welcome home”, indeed!
Nice to meet you, too, Calisa!

  9. Hi Darcy,

I love the title, “Keeper Of The Heart” and the cover. Lighthouses throw off a certain magic, don’t you think?

Congratulations on your release. There is something so exciting about getting that email saying, “We love your story.”

I too like stories where the hero/heroine engage in plenty of verbal sparring. I like to laugh at witty lines. That’s why I include a lot of humor in my stories
