Monday Magic Presents Romantic Suspense Author, Alicia Dean

Today I’m excited to present a fellow Oklahoma Romance writer, Alicia Dean. First, I’d like her to tell us a little bit about herself. Okay, Alicia, you’re up.

Alicia: I write both romantic suspense and paranormal. I was first published in 2007 through The Wild Rose press. Since then, I’ve had several titles released through them, along with a paranormal through Dorchester, and two self-published books that are part of a suspense series. My latest paranormal romance, Soul Seducer, will be released through Adam’s Media’s  new romance line on June 4th. I’m sooo excited to be a launch author for them.

I’ve always loved to read–still do although I don’t have as much time for pleasure reading as I’d like–and have wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. I love writing, and especially love it when I hear back from a reader who enjoyed my books. There’s no rush quite like that.

Callie: I agree, there is no rush like that. Tell us, what does your family think of your writing?

Alicia: My family is very proud. They’re extremely supportive, and I feel truly blessed. My dad passed away in ’94. I would have loved for him to know I’d realized my life-long dream of becoming a published author. He was proud and encouraging, just knowing I had the desire. He would definitely be one of my strongest supporters.

Callie: I’m sure he’s up in heaven boasting about his daughter’s success. So, what do you think makes a good story?

Alicia: I think a good story will hold a reader’s interest where they don’t want to put it down and can’t wait to find out what happens next, have some kind of impact on them (emotional impact, scaring the bejesus out of them J, something), and hopefully stay with them even when the book has ended.

Callie: So true. I love it when a book really touches me. What are you working on now?

Alicia: I am working on a gothic romance novella series with Mel Odom, and I will be writing a sequel to Soul Seducer soon.

Callie: You are one very busy lady. And now we want to know, do you love or hate writing sex scenes?

Alicia:  Neither. While writing sex scenes is not my favorite part, I don’t mind writing them. However, I don’t like to write long, extended, detailed sex scenes. In my stories that have those, it was per my editor’s suggestion. J My personal preference is to give enough so the readers know how the characters are affected, but not go on for pages and pages.

Callie: I find most authors have a particular way of writing sex scenes. What was your reaction when you got the first “call”

Alicia: I was thrilled…elated beyond belief. In all the years I’d spent dreaming about the moment, the reality of it was much better than I imagined. Although the feeling isn’t quite the same as it was the first time, each time I get a contract offer, I’m absolutely ecstatic.

Hey Alicia, good to see you here. I cracked up about the sex scenes comments. As a male author, I have to be careful not to write brief sex scenes, as I don’t want a predominantly female audience to get the wrong idea about me. J

I have loved all the books of yours I’ve read, and still have to list your installment in the King Brothers anthology among my favs. I wish you great luck with Death Offerings, and much success with your writing. shihanderek at yahoo dot com

I remember when I first met you, Alicia. I believe you had recently moved to Kansas and were visiting OKRWA. I am so glad you are back! I’ve been very fortunate to be able to beta read the first two of your suspense series books and can’t wait for the next one! Like you, I would love to share my writing joys with my parents having lost both in the 80’s, but I know they are both smiling on me. My mom was a diehard reader so I can just see her dancing with each success and hear her encouragement with each setback. Congrats on your success and thanks for letting us get to know more about you. What better way than with fellow Okies! 🙂
