Monday Magic presents Romance author, Rose Vanden Eynden

Callie: I’m excited to have Rose Van VandenEynden with us today to tell us about Merlyn’s Raven, her new book.

Let’s find out a little bit about Rose.

Rose: I started writing when I was very young. I remember putting together a storybook when I was in first grade, and it was all about my father’s job as a railroad engineer. My first grade teacher liked it so much, she asked to keep it, which annoyed my father, so I made him another one. Throughout my school years, I wrote stories, and many of my teachers encouraged my writing. I had no idea, though, that you could actually have a career as a writer without being a journalist! I chose a different path, and now I have my own business as a spiritual intuitive consultant, a massage therapist and healer, and an instructor. I came back to writing after my mother died, and it reminded me how amazing and cathartic the process could be. I have published short stories in anthologies and magazines along with three successful metaphysical nonfiction books. Now, I am finally realizing my dream of writing and publishing novels. I try to keep all of this work balanced with my role as a wife and mother of teenagers, but it is challenging sometimes.

Callie:  Teenagers can be very challenging. I thought when mine got to be young adults, it would ease up.  Hmm. Not yet. So with all you have going on, what is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Rose: For me, having a writing schedule is a challenge. I work at my office four days a week, and some of those times are evenings and weekends. As a minister, I also work some Sundays. My days off work are Mondays and Tuesdays, so I try to squeeze in blogging and writing on those days, along with other household chores and things I need to do for my business. I don’t have a set writing schedule, so I write when I can. I have been known to crank out 15-20 pages in one sitting just because I don’t have an hour or two to write every day. I suppose it works for me—I’ve published four books this way!

Callie: Wow. Four books on that schedule. You’re an inspiration. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Rose: I have lots and lots of conversations with my characters. If you were driving next to me on any given morning, you’d notice that I talk out loud in the car, and there is no one sitting in the passenger seat! I love to create dialogue this way, and I have many back-and-forth exchanges between different characters as I write a story. For me, this helps cement characterizations in my mind so that I can write my characters more clearly. I also use a lot of this dialogue in my actual stories. I’ve noticed, though, that I sometimes forget the details of these conversations. I need to start recording them on my cell phone, since I now have the technology to do so!

Callie:  Ah, the old talking to your characters routine. I don’t do it out loud, but my characters and I do have lots of things to say to each other. What does your family think of your writing?

Rose: My family, especially my husband, is very supportive of my writing. He is a writer himself, so he understands the passion for writing and the challenges presented by living a creative life. He is a great sounding board, a judicious editor, a fair critic, and an awesome cheerleader. On the other hand, my kids don’t seem to think I’m anything special. This is actually a good thing—it keeps you humble.

Callie:They probably don’t think you’re anything special because they’re teenagers, and at that time of their life, it’s all about ‘them.’ My young adult children prefer not to have their friends know I write sex scenes. What are you working on now?

Rose:  I currently have several projects vying for my attention: a sequel to MERLYN’S RAVEN; the revision of a novel I wrote many years ago that can be classified as a contemporary romance set in the world of the theatre; the story of a young woman struggling to find her biological mother, who also happens to be her long-lost aunt; and a young adult dystopian novel that suddenly came to me out of nowhere. The Muse works in mysterious ways.

Callie: Your current projects sound very interesting. Where do you see yourself, career wise, in five years?

Rose: In five years, my boys will be out of high school and in college, so I hope this will afford me more time to devote to writing. Of course, I’d love to have more books out for readers to enjoy, and being on the New York Times bestseller list is a goal I’ve had for several years. In my belief system, dreaming big and setting an intention are the ways to garner success. If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. I am living proof of this!

Callie:  I agree, you are living proof of achieving what you imagine.
