Monday Magic Presents Author B J Scott

I’m so excited to have author B. J. Scott with me today to take us to her magical storyland. Her book, Highland Legacy, is a fantastic read.

Let’s ask her to tell us a little bit about herself.

With a passion for historical romance, history in general, and anything Celtic, I always have an exciting work in progress. Each story offers a blend of romance, adventure, suspense, and, where appropriate, a dab of comic relief. Carefully researched historical facts are woven into each manuscript, providing a backdrop from which steamy romance, gripping plots, and vivid characters—dashing alpha heroes and resourceful, beguiling heroines you can’t help but admire—spring to life. A member of RWA, World Romance Writers, Celtic Hearts Romance Writers, and Savvy Authors, I also write contemporary, paranormal, time travel, and romantic suspense.

C.S. Lewis first captivated my imagination in the fourth grade, and my desire to write sprang from there. Following a career in nursing and child and youth work, I married my knight-in-shining-armor, and he whisked me away to his castle by the sea. In reality, we share our century-old home in a small Canadian town on the shore of Lake Erie with three dogs and a cat. When I’m not working at my childcare job, on my small business, or writing, you will find me reading, camping, or antique hunting.

Callie: Wow, your life (and home by the sea) sounds fascinating. What is your work schedule like when writing?

Hectic. I try to write every day and always have a pad and pen or my net book close by. If an idea strikes, I am ready. Working a full time job and running a small home-based business makes finding time to write a challenge. I am fortunate to have a job that allows me some free time during my shift when I can jot down ideas or even work on a chapter or two. I write when and where I can. Be it first thing in the morning, when I find the muse speaks the loudest, or in the wee hours of the morning…when I should be asleep, I write when necessary.

Callie: Sounds like a lot of authors’ world, balancing everything. What are you working on now?

I currently have another Scottish historical in the works, a sequel to Highland Legacy planned and a Civil war based paranormal/historical/time travel WIP. I also have several projects that I have completed over the years, but are waiting for rewrites to bring them up to par.

Callie: Another Scottish historical would be great. I really loved Highland Legacy. What does your family think of your writing?

My husband is my biggest supporter and biggest fan. We met later in life and when I first told him about my ambition to write and he read some of my work, he encouraged me to reach for my dream. The rest of my family were supportive, but I think skeptical when they learned I was trying to become a published author. That has all changed now that my first book is on the market.

Callie: It’s nice to surprise them, isn’t it? How do you deal with writer block?

With several WIPs, I can often work on another story when the must stops speaking for one. Taking a day or two away from the project and working on something else is often all it takes to get back on track. When the muse totally deserts me, it is a sign that I need a few days away from writing all together. I do something I like to do and try to catch up on my sleep. Usually after a short break, things are fresh again.

Callie: Ah, nothing like a little sleep to put things in perspective. Where do you see yourself career wise in five years?

Ideally, I would be writing full time. No longer working at my full time job or my home business, I would spend my time writing and taking time to travel to those places I have written about and dreamed about visiting all my life.

Callie: Thanks so much for joining us on a our carpet ride to your storyland.

      Hey Cheryl

Yes we love our house by the lake but living in a small town does have drawbacks. We have to go into larger towns for everything. Speaking of busy, got to head to work. Thanks for stopping in.

Thanks for stopping in today, Barbara. Some days I wonder how I ever got my book finished 😉 Especially when you do find time to write and the muse decides to take a holiday and you end up staring at a blank screen. That happened to me last week. I was off for the Christmas break and did not accomplish much in the way of writing. Back to normal this week and hopefully will make up for lost time.
