This week I begin my series “Monday Magic–A Carpet Ride to Storyland.” Each Monday I will feature an author who will tell us about herself and her newest release.
Okay, Rebecca, let’s start with all about you:
I’m a practicing attorney with a major state university, which is my second career. My first career was in medical administration, and now my third (and hopefully my last) career is romance author. My husband and I live in North Central Florida. No dogs, cats, guinea pigs, or small children. Nothing against them – we just don’t have any.
Callie: It sounds like a quiet, peaceful life.
What does your family think of your writing?
At first they thought it was my hobby. Just a little something I did with what little spare time I have. Now, they are very proud. Of course they think after one book I’ll be the next Stephenie Meyer. I have to explain she’s the exception, not the rule, and that one book does not a career (or a millionaire) make.
Callie: I understand completely. My sister still thinks I’m going to be famous!
What are you working on now?
I’m working on another contemporary romance, Dreams of Perfection, about a successful romance writer whose real-life boyfriends never live up to her own perfectly-drawn heroes. She experiences her own Pygmalion romance when her latest hero comes to life. But maybe perfection isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Callie: Oh, that sounds very interesting. I like that her hero comes to life.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
I stop trying to force it. I take a break, maybe stretch out on any available flat surface, and let my mind wander. It can usually take me to some pretty weird places, like what’s on the evening’s dinner menu, or whether I should wear the red silk blouse or the sequin tank to the party. But I eventually stumble across something that unfreezes my brain and the words start flowing again.
Callie: It’s interesting to find out how various authors deal with the dreaded ‘writer’s block.’
What was your reaction when you got the first “call”?
I was sitting in my office when I got THE e-mail – the do or die communication from the publisher. I looked at it for a couple of minutes trying to decide whether to open it or not. Luckily I chose to open it, because it contained the news I’d been hoping for. I did a happy dance – a samba, I think – then, looked around for someone with whom I could share my happy news. There was no one. Both my secretary and my colleague were out of the office; my best friend was in a meeting, my husband was unavailable, as was my sister. So I continued to perform my solo dance around the office. It was probably for the best no one was there – no witnesses.
Callie: Sounds like you still did all right with your party of one to celebrate.
Where do you see yourself, career wise, in five years?
With a bookshelf of best-sellers bearing my name, working on the next best-seller, and having given up my attorney day-job.
Callie: That certain sounds like a good, solid plan, and I’m sure you’ll do it.
Rebecca’s newly released book is The Promise of Change. One lucky commenter will receive a free copy.
Here is the blurb:
Sarah Edwards loves stability, but now finds life has other plans for her. Divorced, bored, and twitchy, she’s convinced her impulsive, sometimes irrational decisions are the sign of a mid-life crisis, and the contradictory actions and emotions are giving her family and friends mental whiplash. Her abrupt resignation from her job is the final straw. But a two-week trip to England seems the perfect pick-me-up for this Anglophile and Austenite.
Enter Alex Fraser, a.k.a. the Earl of Rutherford, who although a member of the lucky sperm club, prefers to be known for what he’s accomplished, rather than a fate of birth. Despite his family’s disapproval, he is determined to work in his chosen profession of acting. He’s always preferred casual flings with beautiful women who have no illusions of marriage. That is until he literally bumps into Sarah in an Oxford pub.
Despite an idyllic week together, Sarah gets cold feet and returns to the States determined to come back down to reality. A year later, the realization of Sarah’s life-long dream unexpectedly brings Alex back into her life, in what she believes is an ironic twist of fate. Will Sarah’s decisions leave her life in shambles, or will they lead to the promise of change?
